The Duke and King planned to steal six thousand dollars from this family. They plan to run off with all the families’ fortune and skip town. Huck discovers that they are planning to do this and he wants to stop them from doing it. Huck takes the money and places it in the coffin to be buried. He decides to tell the family about what he had done so they would know where the money is and that the Duke and King are frauds. Huck does this because he is a good person and wants to do the right thing. He hates that the Duke and King are doing this to the family. It shows that he is a good person and wants to do the right thing.

Vivian I have to agree with you as to the primary purpose of Huck putting the money into the coffin. Although, I am not quite sold yet on the morality of Huck Finn, perhaps he was just trying to save himself from the guilt that he knows that he would've felt if had left the money with the duke and the king. Maybe I'm a little bit to harsh on the kid, however hopefully in time we will be able to tell whether Huck really does have morals just like an adult or not.
