Huck was going to write a letter to Miss Watson about Jim and how he was a runaway slave. He was basically going to be turning Jim in and get him caught. Huck wanted to write her about how Jim was on the loose. He decided not to though because then people would know Huck had been helping Jim, a runaway slave. He also felt guilty to turn Jim in because they had become very close. Huck felt like they had become friends and he didn’t feel that he could betray Jim like that. This showed that Huck was a good person and he didn’t think just about himself. He cared for someone else and decided to keep Jim safe. This showed that Huck had good character.

Jim's Daughter
Jim talks to Huck about how he was homesick and missing his family. He then goes on to tell a story about how one time he had asked his daughter to do something and she just stood there. He had hit her and left then came back and felt terrible about what he had down. This story tells us about how Jim was feeling really homesick and this was the first time we had heard of his family and seen this side of him. We also see this side of him where he can have a temper because he had hit his daughter a few times when she didn’t behave.

Raftsmen
Huck had gotten aboard the raft that there were raftsmen. The raftsmen were drinking a lot and singing and very loud. They were telling stories to each other the whole time about life on the raft. They also kept getting into many fights. This was showing us that raftsmen aren’t the kindest men and that they like to have a good time. They like to be crazy and get drunk all the time. The men also believe in superstitions or at least most of them because there was a time when a barrel came by and one of the men told them that it was bad luck to have it around. All the men were scared of it and they spent the day drinking by themselves. This chapter showed us that raftsmen were rowdy and liked to have a lot of fun.

last American Man
Eustace is not exactly the last American man. He does live in the wild and for the most part lives like a true man would but he still goes into the real world and does use a lot of things that are against what a “true American man” is. He ends up having to go into the real world to be able to make Turtle Island. He has to live in hotels, drive cars, and use skills that he does not think are true to a true American man. Eustace is kind of a hypocrite because he does preach that he is a true American man but he actually doesn’t follow along all the lines because of his dream of Turtle Island and teaching others to be like him. This pushes him away from really living off of nature.
