Linda gets upset because the gold necklace symbolizes her daughters life in slavery to men and to others. It symbolizes the chains that bind you to slavery for as long as you live. Linda never wanted this for her daughter and it hurt her a lot. She knew that this was only the beginning of a harsh life for her daughter. I think that the comparison is true. Even though it was such a nice gift, it meant the start of a hard life for her daughter. It could mean that her daughter was likely to end up the way Linda did.
