When the guy asks the question it takes Joe a little bit to figure out exactly what he wants. He goes through these different options of what he might want. He finally comes down to it that he wants to get out and be shown around in a box. He wants people to see the effect of war and what happens. He wants to make a living and finally feel free with earning money. Joe wants all of this and he just wants to be able to feel fresh air and to have people understand the effects of war. The say that he cannot do it and that it is against regulation because the doctors don’t want him to be seen. They don’t want people to see the effects of war because then nobody will want to fight anymore. They also don’t want people to know what he is capable of and that he is able to communicate because then he could convince many that war is bad.

Johnny Got His Gun -Chapter xvi-xvii
The Christ dream happened right after Joe had been drugged. He had this dream of Christ who came and had the boys play a card game with them a drink. The boys were going off to the war and so then this was their last time to just have a good time. They also learned of their fate and Christ was just helping make it seem ok and everything would be alright. Then Joe comes in and says well he isn’t going to die but he will be worse off than the rest of them because of the state he will be in. Then they all say one last goodbye to their family because they are leaving and will never come back home. While Joe is in the train he leaves and goes find Christ because he feels he is stuck in between he doesn’t fit with living people but he isn’t dead. All the dream is doing is just talking more about how all these soldiers leave and go die and how they didn’t want to go die and how Joe is stuck in between with nowhere to go.

Johnny Got His Gun -Chapter xiii-xv
There were two reasons why Joe started tapping. The main reason was because he was trying to finally make communication with the world and realized he could do it by mores code. He finally figured out that by using his head and tapping it he could make mores code. The other reason he kept tapping was because he just couldn’t stop and start thinking again and go back into his own pattern. He was determined to finally get heard and be able to have somewhat of an escape from the prison he was stuck in. If people could finally understand him then he could have communication with the people around him and not be as lonely and actually be somewhat a part of the world around him. It was his last hope and he didn’t want to give up at all knowing that it could work.

Johnny Got His Gun-chapter xi-xii
Joe decides to master time because he feels that it is the last connection he has with normal world. He compares it to when people are locked in dungeons or lost and how they try to tell time so that they keep sane and can somewhat be aware of what is going on. If you cannot tell time then there is nothing and time is so important. It is what keeps you a part of the world because in Joe’s case he cannot move, see or hear anything and if he could keep time then he could maybe know what time of day it is and guess what is happening. If you do not know what the time is then you are lost in the world basically and he doesn’t want to be completely lost. He wants to have some connection to the world around him that he cannot see or hear. Joe tells time by counting the seconds between nurse changes then he switches from that to going to his bowel movements. Joe finds ways like these to figure out time and he just counts seconds in between things that happen regularly.

Johnny Got His Gun chapter ix-x
Joe does not understand war and thinks that it is stupid how people sign up to die. All you are fighting for in war is for words, like liberty, democracy, freedom. He thinks that if you don’t personally see it and feel it then it is absolutely stupid to be fighting for words. He says all these people have fought and died in the past but have they gotten anywhere? Are they different than anyone else in the world? No, everyone fights for things that just don’t exactly happen and they usually end up dead so they never benefit from it. He thinks it is stupid that people do that. Joe doesn’t see the point in fighting for words and fighting for things you cannot see. He says that it is alright to fight for small things that is only one person but if you fight for more then it turns into a word. Even when you are fighting for a small thing though you shouldn’t risk your life and you don’t, you just bargain.

Johnny Got His Gun vi-vii
The rat comes to visit Joe because he has this hole in his side. He says when he thinks about the hole and when he remembers it is there then he feels the rat coming. Joe has nothing to do but sit and think because he cannot move and he cannot see anything. Joe has so much time on his hands that he is constantly thinking and considering everything and being able to remember everything that has happened. He remembers that army guy they saw who was dead and a rat was eating on him and that is what started him on the rat thing too. The rat represents death and all the soldiers fear rats and know that it is a bad sign when there are some around because rats feed off of the dead. Joe is showing that he is in a bad place and the rat is just a bad sign saying that he isn’t well off and it doesn’t look good for him.

Johnny Got His Gun iv-vi
Joe probably remembers the bakery because it was a time when he had a good job that he actually worked hard on. He also complained a lot with that job and took his legs and arms for granted and being able to move around. Now that he has lost all of his limbs and cannot move he thinks of things that go with never being able to walk or work again. Joe remembers Jose because he admired him a lot. Jose was a really good guy and not like the other workers who came through the bakery. First he left his old job because the daughter fell in love with him. Then when he was at the bakery she wrote him and asked the guys how he should nicely put her down. He also ended up taking two jobs and didn’t know how to say he wanted to quit. So one day he knocked down the pies and got fired but promised the owner he would pay him back which he did. Joe just thinks of him as a real good honest guy who did the right thing and that is why he admired him.
Johnny Got his Gun i-iii
Joe’s situation is that he was in the army and he was badly injured. He had gotten in an accident where his face had gotten blown off, his arms were amputated and he basically was in really bad shape. The doctors somehow were able to save him. He also lost his hearing and throughout this experience he gets going in and out of memories. He is very confused as to what is going on around him and barely conscious. Joe compares his situation to drowning because when he is unconscious and confused and relieving memories he feels like he is drowning. Then when he resurfaces or comes back to normal it feels like he is coming up for a breathe of air. He feels like he is gliding across the water.

The Bell Jar Chapter 19-20
Esther feels like she needs to sleep with Irwin because she thinks she will feel better once she is not a virgin anymore. Also the whole thing with Buddy and how he had lost his virginity really bugged Esther. She couldn’t get over the fact that he didn’t wait and she wanted to catch up with him. Esther didn’t want to be behind Buddy and that is why she wanted to be with Irwin. It really didn’t do much to help improve Esther but maybe make her feel a little more free. She had a bad experience with it and never wanted to see Irwin again. Although it did seem she felt better about having experienced it and gotten it over with. I think it helped her move on in her life from things.
The Bell Jar Chapter 17-18
Esther talks about feeling trapped in a bell jar a couple times in the book. She feels this way because she cannot go anywhere. She is stuck at the asylum with being depressed and feeling suicidal. All Esther wants to do is be able to walk around freely and go about her life in a normal way. She knows that even if she went back into the real world she would still be trapped, because of being depressed and the fact that she has no idea what she wants done with her life. She will always feel stuck and she cannot do anything about it. It really bugged her that she was stuck with the way she was and couldn’t get out of it. It made Esther mad that she couldn’t do anything about it.

The Bell Jar chapter 15-16
The new asylum that Esther goes to is much nicer than the state hospital. It has a huge property with tennis courts and lots of land for them to walk around. There are different buildings each for the level of depending on the severity of your case. The doctors there really were concerned for her and talked to her in a better way. They actually paid attention to her and gave her treatment that would actually help her instead of just doing the first thing they could think of. Dinner was much more formal and there were more options. She was able to have a little more freedom there but not as much. If she had stayed at the state hospital then things most likely would never have gotten better. She wouldn’t have been treated as well and just pushed aside, they would have never treated how she should be treated and ignored her.

The Bell Jar Chapter 13-14
Esther is depressed and has trouble seeing the point of living and why things are the way they are. She cannot find the point of life and this started when she was really confused on what she wanted to do with her life. She also became more upset when she lost her chance for that summer writing class. Everything was falling apart in her life and she couldn’t find anything that truly made her happy but the depressing stories and that didn’t make her happy just was the only thing she could stand. She could only handle pain and suffering. She tries killing herself to get rid of the pain and to be done with the world. She doesn’t want to be here anymore and it was kind of a call for attention, to get somebody to notice her.
The Bell Jar Chapter 11-12
Esther doesn’t like doctor Gordon at first because he is not like the typical psychiatrist who she was expecting. He turned out to be perfect, had a job, perfect family and everything was going great for him. She hated that, that he had everything he wanted in life and it seemed like he bragged about having everything he wanted. He also didn’t act like a psychiatrist like she thought, he didn’t tell her what was wrong with her and she didn’t like that. He was too happy for her and she needed someone just to tell her what was wrong with her. He obviously was not helping her because at the end of chapter 12 she still was thinking of suicide and gave up treatment. She was still just as bad and not sleeping well and nothing was really improving for her. What he did, did not help at all and she was still a total wreck.

The Bell Jar-Chapter 9-10
When Esther returns to Boston she goes into this state of not wanting to do anything. She keeps to the house and gives up on doing anything over the summer. She goes through all these different options saying she will do this and that but actually she decides not to do any of it because she is defeated with everything that has happened. Before she came home she and Marco had this thing where he was very rude to her and he attacked her outside. That really scared her and made her really down when she left New York for Boston. Then she got to Boston and found out she wasn’t chosen for the summer program. All of this led to her being sort of depressed and not happy with how things were. She considered changing majors and not doing stuff that she might have done. She just gave up on everything and felt very defeated.

The Bell Jar-chapter 7-8
Esther wants Constantine to seduce her and they actually end up just falling asleep. She wants to be with Constantine and Constantine want to be with her. Constantine doesn’t really react any way other than just keeping his distance from her and not trying to seduce her. She ends up falling asleep and he ends up falling asleep along with her. Then the next morning they wake up and go their own ways. I think that he doesn’t try to seduce her because he is a gentleman and keeps to his values. He was trying to not be like all the other guys. He also probably didn’t have enough interest in Esther to want to seduce her either. He liked her but might not have liked her in the way of wanting to seduce her.

The Bell Jar-chapter 5-6
Before Esther had really gotten to know Buddy she thought of his as this amazing wonderful person. She had such a big crush on him and always wanted to get attention from him. She finally did get attention when he asked her to the junior prom. At the dance he didn’t get too close to her and she was very disappointed but then later on in the night he did become more close and they shared their first kiss. She wanted this from Buddy for him to see her as a girlfriend but then after the had been dating for a while Esther finally found out that Buddy was a fake. It was after Buddy had taken Esther to see these surgeries and they had seen the birthing of a baby. Then Buddy had kind of showed his true colors of being ignorant and thinking he is better than everyone. Esther didn’t like this and avoided Buddy from then on. She was actually very happy when he got TB because that meant she wouldn’t have to break up with him.

The Bell Jar-chapter 3-4
Esther avoids chemistry in college because she takes physics for the first semester and absolutely hates it. She does get an A though and that does help a little to make sure she doesn’t have to take chemistry. What she did was she went to her dean and asked if since she needed more literature courses if she could op out of chemistry and take a Shakespeare class. She and the dean agreed that it was pointless to take chemistry because they knew she could get an A and it would be better spent taking a literature class. She also said that she could sit in chemistry just not have to get credit for it or take marks. This impressed the chemistry teacher and everyone was on board for it. Science probably overwhelmed Esther because she is more of a creative thinker and not someone who focuses on facts. It probably was hard for her to learn scientific stuff involving math when she is a writer and sounds like she is stronger on the right side of her brain than the left.
The Bell jar chapter 1-2
The first line of the novel is talking about New York and the Rosenbergs being executed that year. It was a bad case with the Rosenbergs because they had exploited important information to the Soviet Union over the bomb. You get the sense in the first line that Esther was not having an amazing time in New York like she should have. It seems that she was just ok with being in New York and it wasn’t this awesome experience that she should be having. The other girls around her were excited and crazy about getting the experience to go to New York and have this modeling opportunity. She said in the first line that she didn’t understand why she was in New York. It was like she was there because she had gotten the request to come and that was that.

Mona Lisa Smile-character decision
In the movie from what we watched today we see Betty get married to the perfect man. She finally got her ideal life and conformed to society doing what every women is supposed to do, get married and became the perfect wife. Of course it wasn’t her perfect world she and her husband didn’t seem to have that emotional connection it was like they were married because they had to be. In the dinner scene we see that they are very distant and Betty doesn’t seem happy at all. She feels like this is what is supposed to happen for woman and nothing else it is how society works. When her friend told her she applied to go to law school, Betty was outraged and thought of it to be terrible but actually Betty’s way of life doesn’t seem like she is all that happy with it.
Women in the 1950s
Women in the 1950s were not meant to have very high education and to basically end up being the perfect housewife who took care of her family and her husband most of all. It also was a time of conformity and not to have people stand out. There were a lot of rules to follow too and things were strict for women and even for men in society. People had to be poised and smart. We see some of the strict rules when Julia Roberts character first comes to the school. The lady tells her about how she is not allowed male visitors or to have even a hot plate. They are strict rules and also we see conformity and strict rules at the very beginning when all the teachers are dressed the same and when they girls enter they are conservative and poised and all look the same.

Streetcar named Desire ending
Stella was very upset because she had decided to get her sister help and to have her taken away to a hospital. Blanche had become so lost and so out of it that she was telling lies to herself and was not healthy. If Stella would not have done it then who knows where Blanche would have ended up next. Stella did the right thing in getting her sister help and even though it was hard for Stella to do it was the right thing. Stella couldn’t keep having Blanche stay at the house the way Blanche was acting and becoming. Stella also couldn’t just let Blanche go off on her own in the condition Blanche was in. It was a very difficult thing for Stella to see her sister get dragged off but it was the safest place for Blanche to go at the moment.

Blanche's secrets
We discover two things about blanche in this chapter, one being more about how her husband died. We find out that she found of he was common and had told him that then the next thing that happened was that he kills himself. Later on then we find out that Blanche had in fact been staying at the Flamingo and sleeping around with guys. Also, the reason for her leaving the school was because she was with a 17 year old boy in her school and they found out. None of this comes as a surprise because we already had kind of known she did this stuff. We saw it when Stanley confronted her about the Flamingo and when she flirted with the delivery boy, she said something about how she shouldn’t be around him and how she loved it. All of this was not shocking news but it was not the best information on Blanche.

Blanche hating Stanley
Blanche hates Stanley because in the scene before he had abused Stella. She cannot understand why her sister would stay with someone who abuses people. Blanche thought Stella would stay away. She thinks that Stanley is very controlling and abusive and that he is not the type of man who is nice to women. She also thinks he is beneath Stella and her family. Blanche and Stella come from money and Blanche only thinks of highly of people well off and that aren’t slobs. Stanley is a lower class, abusive rugged man who is not someone Blanche wants to see her sister with. She would rather her sister better off and with someone who would support her and take care of her well.

Stanley scene 2 & 3
We are introduced to Stanley in scene 1 and we see him as this guy who loves Stella and is very much the ladies man. He seems confident and very in charge. Also we get a view of what Stella thinks of him in scene 1. She talks so highly of him about how he had been in the war and how she loved him so much and he loved her. It seemed as though they had this great love and were completely fond of each other. We also assume that Stanley is this wonderful guy who is kind to his wife. In scene 2 and 3 we see a different Stanley who is very controlling and who is kind of abusive. At the poker game Stanley hits Stella a few times and the last time was very hard. He also talks rudely to her and isn’t kind to Stelle they way we assumed he would be after hearing about him in scene 1.

End of Book
Willy decided to take his life at the end of the book so that his son could have money. Willy believed that this would make Biff happy and that Biff would think very highly of his father for doing this. Willy believed that this was the only way to fix things and to make everything right. It wasn’t though and he shouldn’t have just killed himself. Willy had been offered a job by Charley and there were chances given to him to make things right and stay alive. He didn’t need to kill himself at all to fix things. Willy was not very noble to have done this. He was taking the easy way out instead of finding a real job and bringing in money and actually fixing the problems between him and Biff. He just took the easiest plan and killed himself so that his family would get his insurance policy from his death.

Biff and Willy
Biff goes to the hotel to try and get his dad to talk to the school because Biff flunked math. Biff goes and finds a women in the hotel room with his father. He breaks down and sees that his father is nothing but a fake and cheating on Biff’s mom. Biff hates seeing this and yells at his dad for doing this and for being a fake. Biff also says his dad could never do anything. Biff then says he is done and will not be going to college and is mad at his father for doing what he did. This ruined their relationship because Biff saw that his dad was not a good man. It shattered Biff to see his dad doing this because Biff always believed the best in his dad. This is why today Biff and Willy don’t get along because Biff knows that his dad cheated on his mom and that his dad is a fake.

Charley's offer
Charley offered Willy a job at his office because Willy was always coming in asking for money and Charley knew Willy wasn’t making any at his job he was at before. Willy refused him and said that he couldn’t work for him. Willy should have taken the job because it would have given him more stability and he could have actually been bringing money home. Willy needed to swallow his pride and take the offer that Charley had offered. Slowly Willy is losing everything about him and if he would have just taken the job he could have built himself back up and been supporting his family instead of trying to live through his sons. Willy’s life is so messed up and he actually had an offer for a job where he would be making a decent amount of money and wouldn’t have to keep coming to Charley for loans. It was wrong of him not to take the job.

Ben and Willy
Ben seems to have been trying to get Willy out of the mess he was building for him in the cities and to be actually out there making money. Ben knew that Willy wasn’t ever going to make himself out of anything while staying in the city, he needed to get out and go work in another part of the world. Ben could have opened up doors for Willy and actually got him making wages probably. It sounded like Ben knew what he was talking about and Willy should have listened to Ben because now Willy is without a job and never got anywhere in his career. It seemed that ever since Willy had been trying to prove Ben wrong and that is how he got himself so deep into something that wasn’t bringing him any pay at all. Linda did not like the idea of Ben coming in and moving her family somewhere else. She saw it that they were happy where they were at now and that Willy had a good job, they had a nice house and the kids were happy. She didn’t want any of this changing.

Happy and Biffs Plan
Biff and Happy’s plan is to go into their own business and sell sporting goods. This way they can be in charge and Biff wouldn’t have to be exactly in the business world, he could take days off when he wanted. They would call it the Loman Brothers and play sports and sell sporting goods. I think that this idea probably will not work because Biff is somebody who cannot stay in one place. Biff and Happy also don’t get along all the time and it seems that they will clash sometimes. I also think that Willy will try to interfer and Biff and him will get into fights. Willy will want things to go a certain way and try and make the business perfect. The personality that Biff has it just seems that he will not want to do it long and end up going off somewhere.

Willy and Charley
Willy isn’t the nicest to Charley and yells at him quite often. There are some parts though where it seems that Willy might actually like Charley and consider him a friend. It seems as though Willy thinks Charley is beneath him or that he isn’t well liked like Willy is. It could be that they are only friends to just have a friend and since they are neighbors. Willy and Charley butt heads a lot on a lot of the situations. For example, when Willy’s kids were stealing stuff from worksites Charley went down on him and during the card game too there were times when Charley wouldn’t take any of Willy’s nonsense. Charley’s son is Bernard who Willy and his kids made fun of and Bernard helped tutor Biff. It seems as though Charley and his son are there more as a favor than anything. They are there to watch out for things and are the underdogs who take care of Willy and his family.

Janie returning home
In the opening chapter when Janie came home from her journey the town people didn’t treat her very nicely because of the way she looked. She was wearing overalls and they thought she looked goofy. There was one person who stood up for her though and she told Janie that she was beautiful and to not listen to them. Janie had grown up with her grandmother and played with white children. She had never known the difference from her and the white kids until someone showed her a photograph of her. She then realized that she was different from the little children and that is when they started treating her poorly. Both of these show a time where Janie was treated poorly because of the color of her skin. She was judged because of it and when she was a child she had no idea why really but in the town she knew more as to why it was happening.
