The Bell Jar-chapter 3-4

Esther avoids chemistry in college because she takes physics for the first semester and absolutely hates it.  She does get an A though and that does help a little to make sure she doesn’t have to take chemistry.  What she did was she went to her dean and asked if since she needed more literature courses if she could op out of chemistry and take a Shakespeare class.  She and the dean agreed that it was pointless to take chemistry because they knew she could get an A and it would be better spent taking a literature class.  She also said that she could sit in chemistry just not have to get credit for it or take marks. This impressed the chemistry teacher and everyone was on board for it.  Science probably overwhelmed Esther because she is more of a creative thinker and not someone who focuses on facts.  It probably was hard for her to learn scientific stuff involving math when she is a writer and sounds like she is stronger on the right side of her brain than the left.

Vivian,
I definitely agree with you that Esther is more creative than factual. You did a good job of phrasing it as Esther having more of a right sided brain than a left. I think Esther wouldn't be able to comprehend all the abbreviated elements and symbols in Chemistry because she liked dealing with different shapes and colors in Botany class. Esther got away with lying to the teachers and also was clever in doing it. Esther also received an A in Physics class, even though she didn't like it. This shows that we know more about what kind of character Esther is. Good Job!!!!

Vivian,
I agree with you that Esther despises physics and chemistry and that she came up with a very crafty plan to get her out of it. Since she is a straight-A student she is able to convince them that her time would be better spent taking an English course instead. I also agree with you in that Esther felt overwhelmed by these two courses because they were more about facts and memorizing and didn't use much imagery or leave much interpretation. You used good detail to explain what happened and good support to back your reasoning up.
Great job!
